Tiki torches

Tiki torchesThe flames on the tiki torches dance in the warm, evening breeze. The scent of Hawaiian Plumerias fills the night air, and gentle sounds of quiet waves lap the beach. Ahhhh . . . paradise! Something about tiki torches always seem to invoke this sensation. Why a backyard luau wouldn’t be complete without them!

In days not so long ago, tiki torches were used as the primary source of light on many islands. And, they were made of mainly one material – bamboo. Today, though, tiki torches are made of many different types of materials and are even fueled in different ways. I’ll be discussing the different styles and makes of tiki torches, to help the shopper make an informed decision.

Tiki torches today are made of an array of materials such as glass, ceramic, copper, brass, steel, and of course, bamboo. The type you choose will depend upon your tastes and what kind of theme you are trying to achieve in your garden or patio. Certain materials tend to have more advantages, though, over other materials.

For example, copper, brass, and steel tiki torches are more weather resistant and tend to give a very sophisticated look to your garden. Many large hotels in Hawaii use these when they need permanent outdoor lighting for pathways or around the pool. With an occasional thorough cleaning and proper storage, metal tiki torches will last a very long time.

If your tastes are more eclectic or art deco, you might appreciate ceramic tiki torches. These are usually much more colorful and can become more a centerpiece in the garden rather than just subtle side lighting. But, because they are ceramic, they will require you to be much more delicate with them. You will have to extremely careful when cleaning and storing these tiki torches.

Some tiki torches are now battery-operated and have no flame. These torches are best used indoors, though they go great outdoors, as well. This is an especially intelligent choice when you have a lot of children around. They look so close to the real thing that it’s hard to tell the difference.

And, of course, the traditional favorite is always a crowd pleaser – bamboo tiki torches. If you are really trying to create a tropical island theme, then bamboo tiki torches are definitely the most authentic. To clean them, you just need mild soap, water, and a rag. When storing tiki torches, you want to store them upright if possible. With oil torches, you will want to store the oil in a different plastic or glass container. You can lay the torches on their sides, but make sure to lay them on tarps or other plastic to prevent scratches to the torches.

Tiki torches actually require very little maintenance and are always a fun and entertaining addition to any home or party. Enjoy that feeling of peaceful paradise once again with tiki torches in your home.
