Tiki torch
If
you have a tiki torch or if you are considering
buying some, you need to be aware of the hazards
associated with these torches. A tiki torch tends
to be a little top heavy – the torch is
generally about five feet tall, and it is mounted
on a skinny stake that is stuck in the ground.
Because of this, a swift wind can knock over a
lit tiki torch, and the torch's flame could potentially
create a backyard fire.
To avoid such a problem with your tiki torch,
be sure that it is planted firmly into the ground.
Stick the stake in as deep as it will go. Never
leave a lit tiki torch unattended. Do not use
it on a windy night. Do not roughhouse around
lit torches. Keep the tiki torch at least 4-6
feet away from anything that is combustible. Keep
a fire extinguisher handy. Never use a lit tiki
torch indoors.
You may also choose to stabilize your tiki torch
by creating a specific place for it: find a PVC
pipe that fits closely around the shaft of your
torch. Dig a hole and bury a foot-long piece of
the PVC pipe into the ground, and then slide your
tiki torch into it. The PVC pipe sleeve should
steady your tiki torch.
